Living Sustainably

Vegetables At Earth Trust we believe that the best way to look after the places we love is to change the way we live.

We help people imagine living sustainably in the future and encourage everyone to put this into practice through their daily lives.

‘Green Living’ will help you identify small things you can do day-to-day that will help us all live more sustainably.  Here are a few things you could do to start you off.  If you have suggestions you would like to share with others click contact us and let us know!

Save energy at home

Electricity is one of the biggest producers of carbon emissions which contribute to global warming. Although our lives are so dependent on electricity, reducing consumption is actually very easy!

  • Remember to ‘turn off’ electrical items at the plug socket when not in use (lights, television, DVD player, stereo, computer etc).
  • Unplug your mobile phone as soon as it's fully charged
  • Fit energy-saving light bulbs

Shopping and transport

Much of the food and drink we consume has travelled thousands of miles to reach our kitchen. By buying locally produced goods we can reduce our carbon footprint. Our own travel contributes to carbon emissions too.  The more we can think about and act to reduce these emissions the better.

  • Buy local fruit and vegetables
  • Buy clothes and products produced close to home
  • Use buses and trains whenever possible, or investigate car sharing to school or work
  • Walk for shorter journeys rather than using the car

Eliminate, Reduce, Reuse & Recycle

Each household in the UK produces about one tonne of rubbish every year! That's a lot of rubbish - about enough to fill a double-decker bus!

  • Eliminate the creation of waste in the first place - could you buy a product with less packaging in the first place, or ask the supplier to reduce the packaging?  Could a broken item be fixed rather than thrown away or recycled?
  • Reuse bags, bottles and containers and avoid using foil and sandwich bags
  • Use a bag-for-life instead of using plastic carrier bags each time you visit the supermarket
  • Recycle junk mail, or return it to the sender, asking to be removed from future mailings
  • Use both sides of printer paper at home and in the office
