Volunteer Profiles

Volunteering at Earth Trust

Don’t just take our word for it. Here's a word from some of our volunteers:

How long have you been volunteering at the Earth Trust?

For more than ten years, since before the Trust moved from Little Wittenham Manor.

Why do you volunteer for us?

I really appreciate how the Trust is trying to connect people with their natural surroundings. It is a pleasure to see young families coming to Earth Trust events (sometimes from far away), and enjoying the experiences on offer. Volunteers at the Trust are made to feel very welcome, are well looked after and not just taken for granted.

What sort of volunteer work do you do?

On several occasions I have led guided walks around the Clumps talking about their remarkable geological and archaeological history, but I am more than happy to help with other activities, for example at Lambing and Christmas events - even standing in the rain directing cars at the entrance gate!

What’s your favourite thing about volunteering here?

The staff are friendly, hard-working and enthusiastic, and the location never fails to be inspiring.

How long have you been volunteering at the Earth Trust?

I volunteered for 3 months during the Summer of 2014.

Why do you volunteer for us?

I'm a student and am passionate about sustainability. The Earth Trust is a charity that I share the same values and morals as. I wanted to gain experience in the sustainability sector to help me secure a job once I graduate and I viewed the Earth Trust as a brilliant company to learn from.

What sort of volunteer work do you do for us?

I worked with the Development and Communications Team; primarily organising the 10K Run! The race was the first that the Earth Trust had ever organised so I was honoured to help organise it and thoroughly enjoyed my role.

What’s your favourite thing about volunteering with us?

The beautiful landscape that surrounds the office! It creates a lovely working atmosphere as all the staff are very welcoming and kind.

How long have you been volunteering at the Earth Trust?

Since 1982, when I was one of the very first volunteers at Wittenham Clumps.

Why do you volunteer for us?

I’m fascinated by the birds here and welcome the opportunity to build an in depth knowledge of the site and see the changes in wildlife over the years. I’ve been able to extend my range and expertise, and have learned a great deal here. I also enjoy passing on my expertise to anyone interested.

What sort of volunteer work do you do?

I do anything to do with birds and wildlife in general, but most of the time I’m doing bird ringing, nest box surveys and bird surveys for the farm and Little Wittenham Wood.

What’s your favourite thing about volunteering here?

The staff; they are a "motley crew" but they all make me feel at home and have a good sense of humour!
